고전주의에서 낭만주의로 넘어가던 시대의 독일 작곡가이자 피아니스트이자 교육자였던 알로이스 슈미트(Aloys Schmitt 1788-1866)는 그의 이 Op. 16 연습곡으로 유명합니다.
알프레드에서 출판한 이 연습곡집은 크게 세 부분으로 나뉘어 있는데 첫 번째 부분에서는 5도권 안에서 다양한 싱글과 더블 노트 패턴들을 통해 손가락의 독립성을 발달시키는데 중점을 두고 있습니다. 두 번째 부분에서는 스케일과 아르페지오 연주를 위한 엄지손가락 위로 다른 손가락을 넘기는 패턴에 집중합니다. 세 번째 부분에서는 스케일과 아르페지오의 종합 연습을 다루고 있습니다.
